Joce to Music
By Jocelyn De La Cruz
“Jocelyn, Janelle, hurry, you’ll be late.”
It was the morning of a hot and humid summer day. I was in my room putting my socks on while my twin was in the bathroom. We were both getting ready for the very first day of 5th grade at Chollas-Mead Elementary School. I was feeling nervous and scared because the whole campus was brand-new to me.
“Mom, I am scared,” I told my mom. She is really a super wonderful mom. Mom just looked at me and said as clear as day, “You will be okay Jocelyn. You have your sister by your side, now go get your socks on.” Then she chuckled and pointed to my room. She always does that.
A little later we arrived at Chollas-Mead. At the school, we found the class we would be in.
Right then,Janelle pointed and we saw that both Janelle and I, would be in different classes.
Janelle, my sister, cried out loud, ¨Noo, I want to be in the same class as you!¨
We turned to our mom, and she soothed. ¨Janelle,it will be okay. I am going to take you and your sister to class .
I added,”It’s okay Janelle it can be like 4th grade, we weren’t together either, remember?”
A little later,Janelle and I went to our classes. A few hours in, and it was lunch time. Janelle came up to me and announced, ¨I found new friends.” Then added,¨What about you?¨
I muttered ¨No. But it is okay.”
Once I said that, Janelle’s excitement went away. I quickly responded with,¨But it’s alright,I will eventually will!¨ I saw her excitement come back so this made me slightly happy at least.
The days weren’t too bad at school, but even a few days in, and I still had not found any real friends. There was never a sign of me getting a best friend so I would always hangout with Janelle and her friends.
But I could tell she didn’t like that,so I would try to act like I wasn’t there. You know, like sort of just hanging around off to the side. It’s not so much a twin thing, just that we both have lives. She had her friends. I wanted mine too.
But then, the next day after this, we were on our way to school. I mumbled to myself in the car, “Here we go again.”
I already knew I had to hangout with my sister and her friends that day..
By lunchtime, I walked down to the cafeteria expecting to be friendless still, just hanging out with Janelle’s friends. We were walking to the hill that was on the right side of the playground.
That was the exact moment,I heard a girl yelling¨Pass the ball!¨ So, I turned around and saw a pretty Samoan girl named Music Matau.
No one was listening to her, so I ran to where the ball was. I gave her the ball and she said, “Thank you¨.
After that,I looked back, to where me and my sister and her friends were before. They had left. I was all alone.
This girl, Music, saw what had happened and saw I was alone too. She asked,¨Wanna join me?¨
So of course I said yes. I followed her over to the grass area and we started to pass the ball to each other.
The cool part was that we were in the same class. We just had never had a chance to really connect. That day, when it was time to go into class, we started talking.
¨Hey,did you did the homework ?¨Music said,
I responded with,¨Yeah, but I guess because it was kinda hard not going to lie.”
She laughed and replied,”Yeah I guess so.” This is so like her.
To this day, I am really happy we met and became best friends. She is my best friend. She has always has my back since day one.
She always gets me and whenever I feel low she always makes me feel up. She’ll always put a smile on my face, and never lets me down. I love her so much.
