Mayor for a Day!

Here’s a great persuasive letter from Mya. She’d like to be mayor for the day. When it comes time to submit an essay, remember to look back here. Maybe, you will win!

What do you think? Let her know in the comments.

Dear, Mayor Todd Gloria,

I want to be mayor for a day, because I want to tackle a major issue that I know you care deeply about. In fact, I heard you speak about it in your re-election speech just a few days ago.

As a kid, did you play sports? I developed a passion for soccer, similar to many other kids. The practices were scheduled for 5 p.m., a time when the light of the day was going away fast. When the sun goes down it makes it hard to see clearly on the field. This lack of light  also showed a noticeable drop in temperature. The frigidity in the air during these late practices added a thing to be worried about at practice, what if I get sick? What if my dad does?

Extra Cold

As previously mentioned, the practices during this time of year are really cold. For those who are not used to warmer temperatures, low temperatures can feel really harsh. In California, while many relate the state with sunshine and warmth, these winter months can bring unexpected cold that challenges our commitment to our practice. Do you see what I mean?

Dark

We currently have three lights so I am grateful for that. However, I cannot help but talk about my concern for the boys who are left in the dark. Although we have a small amount of light, it is not enough for our or their needs. In order for one of the lights to function properly, we have to connect it to a car. While I appreciate the lights we have, the reality remains that they do not add too much light, leaving the boys in a challenging position.

Scary

Although it may seem childish to admit, there are moments when darkness can be really scary. The thought of something unexpected coming from the shadows, like something coming out from behind a bush to startle me, makes me a little scared. When I sit on the ground in the field to put on my cleats, I often see that I have sat in a puddle of mud, an unfortunate consequence of not being able to see in the dark.

In conclusion, we need more light for a bunch of good reasons. I think you are a good guy, but will you make a good choice? I can help you. Together, we can make that one special day not about me, but about safety for a whole city of kids, like us.
