BUMBLE BOTS
Competitive Robotics at MTM
The Bumble Bots are MTM’s first-ever competitive robotics team, founded in 2025 and led by Ms. Sarah Hillard. The team competes in VEX/REV Robotics tournaments
across San Diego County, facing off against high school programs from Francis Parker, Crawford, Lincoln, and Sage Creek.
In their debut season, the Bumble Bots competed in four tournaments. They started with a base bot built from instructions and learned fast. By their fourth competition they were getting interviewed about their build process and coding challenges. The team went through three name changes before landing on Bumble Bots
(formerly MTM Robotics, then Reversal Robots).
These are middle schoolers competing against high school teams. Their student-built website documents every tournament, every win, every loss, and what they had
for lunch.
SEA PERCH
Underwater Robotics
The Sea Perch program puts students in charge of building underwater remotely operated vehicles. They waterproof circuits, assemble propulsion systems, and pilot their creations through underwater obstacle courses.
If the seal isn’t tight, the robot floods. That kind of real consequence teaches problem-solving you can’t get from a textbook.
DRONE TEAM
Flight Path to the Future
Millennial Tech Middle School in San Diego has a prominent, award-winning drone program featuring teams like the Daygo Ducks, Flying Squirrels, Jurassic Drones, and Hyper Sonics. Led by teacher Sarah Hillard, the program focuses on STEM, 3D printing, coding, and repairing, with students training for the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation’s (RECF) Aerial Drone National Competitions.
The program, “Flight Path to the Future,” was selected as the 2026 Innovate Award recipient by the Classroom of the Future Foundation, receiving a $5,000 grant. Ms. Hillard was celebrated on May 14, 2026 for this achievement. The Flying Squirrels recently qualified for regionals, bringing home three major awards: Skills, Teamwork, and All Around Champion.
EARTH LAB
Climate Action. Sustainability. Innovation.
Millennial Tech Middle School seeks to empower students to take responsibility for their academic growth and to envision and realize an inclusive and equitable future through climate action, sustainability, and innovation.
We do this by facilitating experiential and hands-on learning in the EarthLab, a partnership program with Groundwork San Diego – Chollas Creek and UC San Diego’s Center on Global Justice.
The EarthLab Climate-Action Park is a 4-acre outdoor classroom and living laboratory that prepares students to be literate in climate and environmental justice issues, comfortable with seeking and testing solutions, and excited to represent our planet’s next generation of environmental stewards.
MEDIA ARTS
Creative Technology and Digital Storytelling
MTM’s Media Arts program taught by Mr. B covers video production, audio engineering, graphic design, game development, animation, and digital storytelling.
Students build real portfolios across multiple creative disciplines.
Mr. B and his students study emerging technologies and produce project based learning utilizing AI and Machine Learning as well as other advanced modern production techniques.
MTM HOWL
ANTHOLOGY
The Voice of the Wolf Pack
The MTM Howl Anthology is a published book of student creative writing: poetry, fiction, memoir, opinion pieces, art, comics, and recipes. Students will create a real, professionally produced book that they and their families can hold in their hands.
The Wolfpack 2026 Anthology is currently in production and will be available in late April at Barnes and Noble.
